Augustine was born in 354 A.D. in North Africa. As a young man, he loved partying and spending his money. However, through prayer, reflection and study, Augustine began to realize his sins; he wrote to God: “Restless is our heart until it rests in you.” He became a priest and bishop, and he shared his conversion in Confessions, his autobiography. Augustine was made a Doctor of the Church for his brilliant writings.

  • Resting Your Heart In Him

    $15.99

Resting Your Heart in Him: Confessions to a Loving God highlights insights and wisdom drawn from The Confessions of Saint Augustine, the spiritual autobiography that has inspired Christians for centuries, as well as excerpts from Augustine’s other works.
Threaded throughout these quotations are tranquil illustrations of foliage and other scenes from nature. Enjoy this book for spiritual encouragement and growth, as a guide in your daily prayers and devotional time, and as an introduction to the writings of one of the greatest leaders in Christian history.

Augustine’s meditations about his life in the light of Scripture include not only an admission of his sins but also an acknowledgment of God’s greatness, grace, and truth. We can rest our hearts in God because we know that whatever we are confessing to Him–whether our worries, our sins, our praises, or our trust–we are coming before a loving God. He forgives us completely and welcomes us into His presence. He exchanges our sins for His own righteousness and guides us in His ways.

With Augustine, confess your struggles and doubts before God. Declare your love for Him and your faith in Him. As you do, you will grow closer to the One in whom your heart finds ultimate peace and rest.

“You made us for Yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.” –Saint Augustine

  • Confessions Of Saint Augustine

Aurelius Augustinus, aka SAINT AUGUSTINE (354-430) was bishop of Hippo, today called Bona, in Algeria. Before his conversion to Christianity, however, he lead a wild and licentious youth in Carthage and later studied philosophy for years in Milan. His Confessions, in which he begs forgiveness from God for his sins and sets himself entirely to devotion to God, is not only a foundational work of Western theology, it is also one of the earliest autobiographies, offering keen insight into the workings of the medieval mind. ALSO AVAILABLE FROM COSIMO CLASSICS: Saint Augustine’s “The City of God” Translator and British clergyman EDWARD BOUVERIE PUSEY (1800-1882) was one of the most influential figures in the Anglican church in the 19th century, formulated theology and doctrine that radically altered the practice of Christianity in England.

  • Confessions

    $10.00

When Saint Augustine wrote his Confessions he was facing, and responding to, a growing spread of asceticism in the Roman world. His task was twofold: to explain to himself the significance of his conversion to Christianity, and to do so in terms that would convince his readers that this was indeed the one, true faith. In his attempt to achieve these aims, Saint Augustine produced a masterpiece of intellectual biography. The Confessions are written with an emotional intensity that sets him apart from the academic tradition to which he belonged, and it is this intensity, combined with ferociously self-honest analysis, that has given his work its last appeal. Beautifully written and suffused with philosophical and theological learning, the Confessions are an outstanding account of the search for truth by a sinner who became a great saint.
