Catherine of Siena
$21.95Engage in Historical Biography at its Most Compelling Set in 14th century Medieval Europe, Catherine of Siena documents a path of humble servitude and devotion leading to some of the most pivotal decisions in the Christian world of that era. Nobel Prize-winning author Sigrid Undset’s heartfelt biography portrays one of the most dynamic women ever to live. At a time when it was rare for women to gain power in society, Catherine’s dedication and focus drove her to play a prominent role in the Catholic Church. Recognizing her calling from an early age, she joined an informal group centered on Dominican spirituality and quickly gained notoriety as a mystic. She is well-known for influencing Pope Gregory XI to move from Avignon to Rome. She later strongly supported Pope Urban VI and remained a guiding voice in the church until her death in 1380. Catherine’s exemplary faithfulness, prayer, and service to the poor gained her recognition at the highest levels of the Church, and she was called upon as a peacemaker. Recently declared the patron saint of Europe, her holiness and knowledge continue to inspire all who read her story. Having extensively researched Medieval Europe for her seminal works of historical fiction, Sigrid Undset was uniquely qualified to study primary sources and breathe life into the biography of St Catherine. Her sensitivity to the devotional heart and unparalleled understanding of time and place is transporting as she paints an insightful portrait of this truly inspirational Christian woman. An uncommonly inspirational work, Catherine of Siena is well suited as a compelling read or a unique gift.

Utopia
$12.00Thomas More’s Utopia is a masterpiece of Renaissance political philosophy, responsible for introducing the term ‘utopia’ and spawning an entire genre of ‘utopian’ and ‘dystopian’ literature. This Penguin Classics edition is a major new translation from the Latin by Dominic Baker-Smith, and includes an introduction and notes on the text.
‘Even if you can’t eradicate harmful ideas or remedy established evils, that’s no reason to turn your back on the body politic’
In Utopia, Thomas More gives us a traveller’s account of a newly-discovered island where the inhabitants enjoy a social order based on natural reason and justice, and human fulfilment is open to all. As the traveller, Raphael, describes the island to More, a bitter contrast is drawn between this rational society and the custom-driven practices of Europe. So how can the philosopher try to reform his society? In his fictional discussion, More takes up a question first raised by Plato and which is still a challenge in the contemporary world. In the history of political thought few works have been more influential than Utopia, and few more misunderstood.
Dominic Baker-Smith’s introduction examines the conflicting voices and perspectives of More’s masterpiece and relates them to the European context of his time. This new edition also includes a chronology, notes, appendices, glossary and suggested further reading.
Thomas More (1478-1535) succeeded Cardinal Wolsey as Lord Chancellor of England, but came into conflict with the king, Henry VIII, by refusing to acknowledge him as sole head of the church. Charged with high treason, More steadfastly refused to take an oath impugning the pope’s authority or upholding the king’s divorce from Catherine of Aragon. More was tried as a traitor at Westminster Hall, and beheaded on Tower Hill. He was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1935.Add to cartOnly 1 left in stock (additional units can be purchased)

Classic Literature Made Simple: Fifty Great Books in a Nutshell
$17.95It has been said, quite correctly, that we write as well as we read. It can also be said that we think as well as we read. Since reading well is so important, it is good to get into the habit of reading good books. The better the book, the better will be our ability to think well and write well.
In Classic Literature Made Simple, literary expert Joseph Pearce takes the reader on a guided tour of fifty great works of literature. The author of over thirty books, Pearce uses his experience of teaching literature at college level for over twenty years to show the reader the moral dimension of each work. He shows how each work presents a mystical mirror to the reader, offering insights into the meaning of life itself.
“Christian civilization has given birth to numerous great books as it has given birth to numerous great saints, “Joseph Pearce writes. “The former should be canonized as are the latter. Great books, like great saints, enrich our faith as they enrich our culture. As such, reading good books should be an integrated part of leading a good life.”
Those who read this book will learn how to read the great books well, which will help them to live the good life well.Add to cartOnly 1 left in stock (additional units can be purchased)

Socrates’ Children Special Edition Box Set
$79.95Peter Kreeft, esteemed philosophy professor and author of over eighty books, has taught college philosophy for sixty years. Throughout those decades, he yearned for a beginner’s philosophy text that was clear, accessible, enjoyable, and exciting (perhaps even funny). Finding none that met those criteria, he eventually decided to write it himself.
In this special edition four-volume box set, Kreeft delivers, with his characteristic wit and clarity, an introduction to philosophy via the hundred greatest philosophers of all time. Socrates’ Children examines the big ideas of four major eras—ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary—and immerses the reader in the “great conversation,” the ongoing dialogue among the great thinkers of history, including the most influential philosopher of all: Socrates, the father of Western philosophy.

Meeting the Protestant Response: How to Answer Common Comebacks to Catholic Arguments
$22.95Thanks to apologetics, millions of regular Catholics have learned to give good reasons for the things they believe, usually to Protestants who challenge their faith with a Bible verse or historical claim. But those critics of the Church have been paying attention, and now they have their own answers to rebut the standard Catholic proofs. In Meeting the Protestant Response, Karlo Broussard follows up his bestselling Meeting the Protestant Challenge by looking at the fresh counter-arguments that Evangelical pastors and scholars have developed and taught their followers to make. On subjects like the Eucharist, the papacy, salvation, and the veneration of saints, Karlo breaks down these new comebacks, shows how they don’t actually disprove the classic Catholic argument, and offers more biblical, logical ways to explain and defend the doctrines and practices of our faith.
